  1. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP): A protein produced by the baby's liver.

  2. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG): A hormone produced by the placenta.

  3. Unconjugated Estriol (uE3): A hormone produced by the baby's liver and placenta.

Purpose and Importance

The Triple Marker Test assesses the risk of the fetus having three main conditions:

  1. Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21): The presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21.

  2. Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18): The presence of an extra copy of chromosome 18.

  3. Neural Tube Defects (NTDs): Conditions where the brain or spinal cord doesn't develop correctly (e.g., Spina Bifida).
