The Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test, also known as Glycated Hemoglobin or simply A1c, is a standard blood test used to check a person's average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past two to three months.
The HbA1c test is used for two primary clinical purposes:
Purpose | Detail |
Diagnosis | Used to screen for and diagnose Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes (it is generally not used to diagnose Type 1 Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes). |
Monitoring | For people already diagnosed with diabetes, it is the main tool to monitor how well their blood sugar levels are being managed over time. |
The diagnostic ranges established by major health organizations (like the ADA) are:
Diagnosis | HbA1c Percentage (%) |
Normal | Below 5.7% |
Prediabetes | 5.7% – 6.4% |
Diabetes | 6.5% or higher |
Treatment Goal: For most adults with diabetes, the target HbA1c goal is often less than 7.0%. This target helps reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications like heart, kidney, and nerve damage.
