What the Test Measures

The standard electrolyte panel measures four primary electrolytes:

Electrolyte

Role in the Body

Sodium (Na+)

Helps control the amount of fluid in your body and is essential for nerve and muscle function.

Potassium (K+)

Crucial for cell, heart, and muscle function; also helps maintain acid-base balance.

Chloride (Cl-)

Works with sodium to help control fluid levels, blood volume, and blood pressure.

Bicarbonate (HCO3-)

Part of a system that helps maintain your body's acid-base (pH) balance. (Often reported as CO2 content).

The electrolyte panel is used for several reasons:

  1. Diagnosing Imbalances: To determine if symptoms like weakness, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, nausea, or confusion are caused by an electrolyte or acid-base imbalance.

  2. Monitoring Conditions: To track conditions that affect electrolyte balance, such as kidney disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

  3. Monitoring Treatment: To check if treatment for an existing imbalance, or if certain medications (like diuretics), are affecting electrolyte levels correctly.

  4. Routine Screening: It's often included as part of a Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) or Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) for general health checkups.
